The Christmas Gift

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 NIV’11

I’m not sure what my eye sockets and the back of my throat have in common, however when I get emotional they do strange things. When I get a little verklemt my voice starts to crack and my eyes get watery. And then I have nothing left to do but feel.

A few weeks back 5 churches were represented as we walked the corridors of a local elderly care facility and sang Christmas carols. I’m glad I wasn’t facilitating because for the first 3 or 4 songs I couldn’t make a noise and the words became unclear on the page. To be sure, I wasn’t sad. I was just moved. I was moved because suddenly I found myself participating in an act of kindness that had no other function, except to be an act of kindness.

With Christmas still lingering in the collective spirit, I would be remiss to not acknowledge that the Lord has designed people to respond positively to expressing love for love’s sake. Why? Because that is something that He does and we have been created in His image. We love because He first loved us and we are blessed to show love, because that’s how He created us. Simple, but clear.

Happy New Year,
Pastor David
