Moving Target

“Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.” 2 Thessalonians 1:4 NIV’11

Have you ever felt like a walking dartboard?

I have some weeks where life leaves its mark on me in a variety of ways. Sometimes internally, occasionally externally, and apparently on the side of my car as well.

I went through a carwash (of all places) last Sunday to clean off the salt that had accumulated on my car only to have a side mirror broken (it was turned in prior) and a few dents put in the side of my door. It was one of those moments, afterwards, when I took a deep breath and just pressed on. I thought to myself, I could be super annoyed or I could just drive forward and appreciate the fact that everything was still intact, mostly. The car still drives in a straight line.

Such a metaphor for life! How many times have you walked into a seemingly benign situation only to walk away with a sense of needless harm? The question then becomes, “Now what? Do I settle into frustration and self-pity? Or do I look up and press on?”

Perseverance is not just for heros and athletes – perseverance is also for people who recognize that this world has its hazards but these said hazards do not need to own us. Whether it’s a spiritual battle or interpreted as otherwise, press on.

Somehow I even managed to laugh out loud.

Love ya,
Pastor David
